Creando a la Dama – Creating the Lady
La protagonista de nuestro corto requirió un mayor cariño a la hora de diseñarla que el resto de los personajes. Queríamos que fuera muy adorable, que te transmitiera ternura y fragilidad; pero al mismo tiempo necesitábamos que fuera muy menuda para que tanto el doctor como la muerte pudieran cogerla en brazos y tirarla de un lado a otro como si fuese una pelota, durante gran parte del cortometraje.
Our main character required to be designed with much more care than others characters. We wanted her to be very adorable and able to communicate tenderness and fragility; at the same time, we needed her to be very tiny to be handled by the Doctor and the Reaper as if she were a ball, throwing her everywhere all along the short film.
Además, se cuidaron mucho las expresiones faciales del personaje, porque necesitábamos transmitir muchos sentimientos con su rostro para poder dirigir al espectador por la historia. Así pues intentamos lograr que, desde los primeros segundos, se viese en la forma de mirar el retrato de su marido el gran círculo afectivo que le unía con él; nos importaba porque es un sentimiento que motiva toda la historia.
Besides, we cared very much about the facial expressions as we needed to transmit a lot of feelings through her face to guide the spectator all along the plot. Doing so, we tried from the very beginning to state the deep affection to her husband by a simple look at his portrait; it was important as this feeling leads the entire story.
También se puso mucho cuidado en los cabellos del personaje. Pensamos que el pelo suelto le daría un aspecto más espectral al personaje y que quedaría estéticamente muy bien, flotando en ese mundo de la muerte, como si de agua se tratara. Debido a las complicaciones técnicas, tuvimos que recogérselo, y ya que la anciana tenía cierto carácter hippie o bohemio, las trenzas le sentaban bien.
We very much looked after her hair. At first we thought that it would be esthetically fine to untie her hair ghostly, to let her flow in this nowhere land of death like in water. Due to technical complications, finally we decided to tie her hair and as she had already some hippie look, plaits suited her.
Por último, prestamos una especial atención al diseño de las manos y los pies, debido a la importancia que tienen en algunos primeros planos y al componente de expresividad que aportan. Desde un principio no nos podíamos apoyar en los ojos; decidimos que los llevaría cerrados para darle a la anciana un aspecto de tranquilidad, como si estuviera esperando la llegada de su hora.
Finally, we put very much effort trying to give expressiveness to her hands and feet, very important in close shots. From the very beginning we knew that we couldn’t rely on her eyes to transmit feelings, as we decided to keep them closed, giving her a peaceful look as if she were waiting for her time to come.
